Control the Office Assistants (All Windows)

These settings control the features and behavior of the Assistants in Office 97, 2000 and XP.

Office XP
Open your registry and find the key:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Common\Assistant].

Office 2000
Open your registry and find the key:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\9.0\Common\Assistant].

Office 97
Open your registry and find the key:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\8.0\Common\Assistant].

Create new DWORD values, or modify the existing values, according to the list below.

  • AsstAssistWithWizards - Should the assistants help with Office wizards.
  • AsstAssistWithHelp - Should the assistants assist with help.
  • AsstAssistWithAlerts - Should the assistants be opened for Office alerts.
  • AsstGuessHelp - Should the assistants guess which help topics are shown.
  • AsstKeyboardShortcutTips - Specifies if tips about keyboard shortcuts should be shown.
  • AsstFeatureTips - Specifies if tips about using features more effectively should be shown.
  • AsstMouseTips - Specifies if tips about using the mouse more effectively should be shown.
  • AsstMoveWhenInTheWay - Should the assistants move when in the way.
  • AsstOnlyHighPriorityTips - Specifies if only high priority tips should be shown.
  • AsstSearchInProgram - Specifies if the assistants can search for product help while in programming mode.
  • AsstShowTipOfDay - Shows the tip of the day at startup.
  • AsstSounds - Specifies whether the assistants can makes sounds.
  • AsstTipTimeout - Specifies the number of seconds before tip bulb is brought down.
  • AsstTop - Specifies top position of the window.
  • AsstLeft - Specifies left position of the window.

Restart any office applications for the changes to take effect.
